9/4/2019 We have been informed we should receive our first shipment of flu vaccine the week of September 27th. We will not start scheduling flu clinic shots until we have received the vaccine. Please keep checking back for more updates!
The kids are all back in school and soon it will be time to get ready for the influenza season. Your doctors at GDP and the CDC say the optimal time to receive flu vaccine is late September or October. This helps protective antibodies last through the entire flu season. There is still benefit in receiving flu vaccine into November and later months.
Influenza is a respiratory illness characterized by high fever, cough, congestion, headaches and body aches. Every year even healthy people are hospitalized with flu complications including dehydration, pneumonia, and asthma flares. Last year there were 129 pediatric deaths due to flu.
We recommend all children over 6 months of age receive a flu vaccine. Babies younger than 6 months of age can be protected by having their parents, grandparents, older siblings and sitters vaccinated against flu. We anticipate receiving our flu vaccine in the next few weeks. Stay posted! As soon as our flu vaccines are in, we will post info on our flu clinics and sign-up for nurse visit appointments.
Between 25,000 and 35,000 people die from influenza or influenza-related complications every year. If the entire family receives their flu vaccine, this will provide even greater protection to everyone in your home. For babies under 6 months-old, we strongly urge anyone caring for the baby, including grandparents, babysitters, older siblings, and parents, to get their flu vaccine. This is why we are proud to offer flu shots to children and adults!
Patients of Great Destinations can receive the flu vaccine and have their insurance billed. Great Destinations Pediatrics is pleased to partner with Where the Garden Grows Medical Clinic to administer flu shots to whole family (that means moms, dads, and even grandparents, too!).
